Happy Holidays!

I would love to wish anyone who reaches this page a VERY HAPPY HOLIDAY SEASON! I would like to use this opportunity to honor what I believe to be one of the best stories ever written. Obviously, I am not alone in this belief, since this story has been reproduced over and over again in movies, MANY different TV series episodes, cartoons, plays, musicals, etc. In fact, I think all these remakes may be an injustice to the original story, because it has caused much of it to become so cliche, that the brilliance and relevance of this story has sadly dimmed. The story is "A Christmas Carol," by Charles Dickens. My personal favorite rendition is the Alastair Sim version done in 1951. He is by FAR my favorite Scrooge. Since I love this story so much, I try to watch any version I can, from the goofy to the honest attempts, and I still find myself going back to the 1951 version every time.

I think we all know the story: Mean, horrible, and miserly Ebenezer Scrooge is visited by 3 ghosts (Christmas Past, Christmas Present, and Christmas Yet To Come) and each one shows him key times in his life (and the lives of those closest to him) that help him see the error of his ways, and, consequently, he turns himself around and not only spreads love and cheer on Christmas, but for all the days of his life.

As corny as a lot of it has become, I feel it is just what we need today. With all the anger and bitterness and division in the world right now, wouldn't it just be so easy to say, "God Bless us, every one," and then take it onward from there?

Well, each year, as I watch this movie, I am filled again with hope, and all I can say is that I can certainly try in my own way to appreciate my life and help anyone I can in any way I can. If that is corny, I'll take corny. I think this world needs a bit more "corny."

Happy Holidays Everyone!

Happy Birthday Jane and Noel!

Well, two Brits, one birthday! Both gave us so much wit, and a few good film versions for the modern attention span as well! I have to say that I am currently in full Jane Austen mode, watching film after film after film (with a bit of reading in between!) of her beautiful works. I adore her, and am quite obsessed with her at the moment. About 2 years ago, I went through a Noel Coward period, and I even went so far as to take a picture of my little boy a la Noel Coward. You see two of the shots here. I had to bribe him with chocolate, but I think these are priceless!

I find it amazing, and quite interesting that these two share a birthday. They are both SO clever and are both writers, and I happen to adore them both--much in common! As a tribute, I would recommend 2 films for anyone interested:

1. Noel Coward's "Brief Encounter," (1945) starring Celia Johnson and Trevor Howard. Poetry in black and white!

2. Jane Austen's "Pride and Prejudice," (1995) starring Jennifer Ehle and Colin Firth (the ULTIMATE Mr. Darcy!). Just brilliant. (By the way, if you can't watch hours and hours of a film, I would next recommend the 1995 version of "Persuasion." I defy you not to be moved by the conclusion!)

Get swept away, if you will, in these masterpieces, inspired by the masterpieces of 2 amazing artistes: Noel Coward and Jane Austen

Happy Birthday!

My Hero...

This guy was off from work 10 years ago today--He worked in the NYC EMS on an ambulance. When he woke up and saw the news, he immediately got dressed and went right away to help, without a second thought. While at the scene, he saw the 2nd tower collapse on hundreds of people, including many of his coworkers and friends. For this guy and all the others at the scene trying to save lives, I say--Thank you. I will always be amazed and grateful for people like you. Oh, and this guy just happens to be my Brother, one of the lucky responders who did not lose his life that day, but who will never be the same person after what he saw right in front of him. Thanks Jefe--you are a hero!
